I’ve been working really hard this past year to my my branch area feel more teen. We basically only have an aisle, so it hasn’t exactly been easy but I feel like we’re making progress. This first picture is an overall look of the area. We rearranged the furniture a bit to open up the area more and covered the sound boards with brightly colored fleece. I wish I had before and after pictures, but the chairs used to be against the wall and the tables clogged up the aisle. It’s amazing how a simple rearrange can really change an area.
I also decided to pull the magazines out of the shelving units and give them their own little space near the windows. The desks were barely being used and this was a nice way to re-purpose them.
And I pulled out the non-fiction and gave it its own little space. It does seem to get noticed more now that it’s separated. The first couple of months after the change, non-fic circulation almost doubled.
My teens are HUGE manga readers. They’ve been begging me for a while to expand the area. This year I finally got some extra shelving, which enabled me to move my audio section. This move plus the magazine & non-fiction moves allowed me to gain almost the whole wall for graphic novels (there are 3 more sections not shown in the picture).
I’ve also discovered my GN readers are more browsers and created a system to make it easier for them. The GNs are divided into 4 sections and given a colored label: Non-fiction & classics (green), Superheros (red), Manga (purple), & everything else/normal GNs (blue). I love how they look on the shelving and it’s been so much easier for patrons looking for a certain sub-genre, especially superheros. It’s so nice to say and this is all the superhero GNs rather than explaining they’re all over.
The last thing I’ll talk about is our artist wall. This wall use to house outdated read posters (aka Twilight) and other random not “cool” posters. I’ve been bouncing ideas of what to do for a while when I came across some square canvas stored in our attic and knew they’d be perfect for livening up this wall. I’ve been giving them out to teens to decorate during various programs or to take home. I love that not only can we display the amazing talent of our teens, but it gives the area a fun vibe.
Oh, and I can’t forget about the new T.V. we got to display teen event info. I’m hoping someday to add book trailers on it as well!
There is still more work to be done, but I feel like we’re off to good start at the Branch. There is talk about us rearranging to give teens a bigger area, but I feel like that is still some time down the road. As things are added I’ll be sure to add an update. I’ll also do a post on my main location in the future. My extra shelving units that I’ve been waiting 3 years for should be up in the next month or so. As soon as they are, I’ll do a post on that area. Sadly, there is a LOT of work needed to get that area feeling as welcoming as the Branch.
If you have a teen space and would be willing to do a post I would LOVE to feature it. I feel the only way to make better spaces is to learn from each other. Plus, it’s just fun to see what everyone else is able to do!
